The fight over the customer: UX vs Product

In some companies, there is a battle ensuing between user experience (UX) practitioners and product people. Both groups belief that they are ideally positioned to connect with customers and meet their needs.

However, the two sets of professionals have slightly differing goals and, in the midst of battle, the customers’ best interests run the risk of being overlooked. That outcome could spell disaster for both teams and must be avoided at all costs.

To gain a deeper insight, I spoke with Dr. Rebecca Gill, Director at Bunnyfoot, a leading UX consultancy and training. Through our in-depth discussion on the topic, we identified vital aspects that you should keep in mind when dealing with the issue of customers. The points that I have covered here include:

  • The varying goals of UX practitioners and product managers

  • Why you should avoid the trap of getting lost in industry-specific terminology

  • How to understand and use the underlying power of human connection

  • The critical nature of evidence and how to build awareness

  • Ultimately how collaboration of UX and product is key

Fighting over customers is a fruitless endeavour. Through this post, I explain how you can use the above information to work inclusively within your product team. In prioritising your customers’ needs and gaining a comprehensive understanding of the roles of UX practitioners and product managers, you can push your business to the next level.

Are you working with a UX team? Is there harmony between the teams?
