Data is essential for Product People

Data is the new oil. That insightful notion has become widespread in recent years and you may have heard the phrase repeated regularly within business and product circles. Frankly, it’s hard to deny the underlying value and power of data.

With that in mind, product people have a duty to learn strategic methods of gathering, analysing, using and, as is increasingly important, protecting vital data. Understanding how to use data to your advantage aids managers in making key decisions about the future of projects. Put simply, it is the secret weapon in strategising to success.

There’s no room for naivety here. Infamous scandals such as the Cambridge Analytica case and the subsequent changes in GDPR legislation have changed the way the world perceives data management. Product people must attain skills and expertise to protect the data that they use in order to prevent instances which could lead to disaster.

For that reason, the central focus of this educational post is two-fold; to unfurl approaches that support product people in understanding data while also delving into safe-guarding this sensitive information. With that in mind, here are the key skills we will highlight and cover:

  • Build some relationships to get access to the data and use it appropriately

  • Become an Excel Power User, it's amazing what you can do yourself easily

  • Learn some statistics and develop visualisation skills to make sense of it

  • Consider Business Intelligence, Analytics and programming skills to go deeper

  • Build your products with data in mind and when it becomes important work with experts

Sharpening your expertise in this sector will help you to take control of data management and analytics. As a product person, it’s vital that you get to grips with this ever-changing area. With my advice in hand, you can create a data strategy that protects your customers while propelling your business forward.

What are you doing with data to help your business make better decsions?
