What’s all the hype about?

To the untrained eye, the Gartner Hype Cycle can appear something of a mystery. But the annually released report can be a powerful tool when used correctly to gain industry insights and an understanding of current trends. While there are different versions of this report based around different audiences, I find that the ‘Emerging Technologies’ Cycle offers a useful wealth of information that, when distilled, can inform product peoples’ decisions and lead to intelligent progress within teams.

Since technology is moving forward at a dramatic rate, we all have a duty to research emerging trends. Using tools like the Hype Cycle can make staying abreast of these developments relatively straightforward. As the Hype Cycle is only published once a year, you don’t have to review it frequently. Instead, product people can refer to it when necessary to inform their next move. This post walks you through the following key areas:

  • Future technologies could be gamer-changers for your industry

  • Technology is not the driver but the enabler of progress

  • How to have better discussions with your technology teams

  • What the Hype Cycle means to product people

  • How you can conduct further research in this sector

By covering these topics and offering expert advice, this post will give you the knowledge you need to best utilise the Hype Cycle and other sources to gain a deeper understanding of technology trends. It includes a breakdown of the differing phases of the Cycle to help you when interpreting it for your own use. This interpretation will lead to better discussions within your technology teams moving forward. Finally, there are some alternative sources, which will prove useful to your future business decisions.

How do you keep up-to-date on technology trends?
